The Foundation

As the title and overview of our website indicate, our mandate as Christians is to build our spiritual houses upon the rock.  That rock is Jesus Christ and His teachings.  Additionally, 1 Corinthians 3:11 indicates that the foundation of the Christian gospel is Jesus Christ Himself.  He is our model and example.

In the past I used to believe that the rock that we built our lives upon was the Bible.  My reasoning was as follows: since God was speaking through everyone who wrote different parts of the Bible, how could any one part be more important than any other?  But as I found out, there are some words of the Bible that are indeed more important than the others.  The words that Jesus spoke while He was here on the earth are the most important parts of the Bible.  Jesus said that Himself.

For example, Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-27 that in order to withstand the storms that attack our houses, we must not only hear the words that Jesus spoke, but we must do them.  The words that God spoke through Moses, and King David, and the apostle Paul are not the rock that we are to build our houses upon.  The rock is Jesus and His words.

In Matthew 12:41-42 Jesus said, "The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.  The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here."

Both Jonah and Solomon wrote portions of the Bible, but Jesus is saying that He is greater than both of them.  Because of this, the message that Jesus proclaimed had more importance.  And as Jesus said in John 5:36, "I have testimony weightier than that of John [the Baptist]."  As important as the message of John the Baptist was, Jesus' message was weightier--it had greater authority and importance.

So let us be careful that we build our lives upon the rock of Jesus Christ and His words.  Then the rest of the Bible can take its rightful place by adding God's additional words to the foundation already laid.  Jesus is both the rock and the foundation of the Christian gospel that is preached.  So, dig deep.  Make sure you're building only upon Him.  Obey His words.  And your spiritual house will stand when the floods and storms attack it with fury!

The wise man built his house upon the rock!
